Mark spent the majority of his career working for Genentech, Inc. in pharmaceutical manufacturing, biochemical manufacturing and project management. Genentech’s mission is to discover and manufacture biopharmaceuticals to meet unmet medical needs, but after more than 22 years with the biotech leader, Mark retired to pursue his passion to have a more direct impact on the health and wellness of people within his local community.

Mark has had Type I diabetes for over 37 years. Upon his diagnosis in 1973 Mark realized the quality of his health was his responsibility. Today’s technology associated with diabetes care did not exist during his early years with diabetes (e.g. blood glucose meters, human based insulin, insulin pumps, etc.), so Mark incorporated exercise and healthy eating into his everyday lifestyle in an effort to control his blood sugar and improve his overall health. Advancements in our understanding of the causes of diabetes, and the medical care necessary for people to successfully live with diabetes, have proven active living and healthy eating are foundational to the health and longevity of people with diabetes. These same foundational elements are also critical to the health of people who are not encumbered with diabetes, and these elements are core to the principles and services provided at Your Body Works.

Mark is also a national volunteer for the American Diabetes Association (ADA), and travels to key markets in the United States to provide training and motivational talks to other volunteers for the ADA. At a local level, Mark is a coach and mentor to people with diabetes, and teaches individuals and care givers how to incorporate proven techniques and habits into the self-management of their disease.
